One of the most hyped video games in years finally launched Thursday morning, and the most popular digital storefronts couldn’t handle it.
I’m talking, of course, about Hollow Knight: Silksong .
The highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s Hollow Knight officially launched at 10 a.m. PT on Thursday, after several years of radio silence and an exciting release just a few weeks ago. Several other indie games have had to shift their release dates to avoid directly competing with Silksong . It’s a big deal.
Unfortunately, as my social feed shows, players are having a hard time actually buying it.

Many of my friends on Bluesky have posted screenshots of the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop crashing when trying to purchase Silksong . Steam and the PlayStation Store also experienced issues, per Kotaku . Nintendo actually had to take down the eShop temporarily for maintenance, which isn’t something you typically see related to any single-player game, let alone an indie side-scroller that costs $20.
Of course, this low price, combined with years of endearing community love for the original game, may help explain why this release is a burden on digital storefronts. It’s also worth noting that pre-ordering and pre-loading the game wasn’t available on any platform, which isn’t typically how the game releases. At the time of writing, it appears people can finally download and play Silksong , though I still received a 503 error when I tried to access the Nintendo Online Store . ( Steam appears to be working fine.)
What are you waiting for? Go check it out if you’re so inclined.
